CDC site lists states with confirmed cases

Advertiser Staff

Here's a listing of states where there are laboratory-confirmed human cases of swine flu infection, as listed on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site:

The list was current as of 7 a.m.

— California, 7 cases

— Kansas, 2 cases

— New York City, 28 cases

— Ohio, 1 case

— Texas, 2 cases

Total count, 40 cases

The CDC said it is aware of only one person who has been hospitalized and that all people who were infected and sick have recovered.

The age range of those infected in the U.S. was 7 to 54 years, with the median age being 16.

Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a media briefing that he expects to see cases in other states and that a broader range of infection severity may be expected.

"I wouldn't rest on the fact that we have only seen cases in this country that are less severe," Besser said.

Among the steps Besser said the CDC will be taking is the distribution of yellow cards at ports of entry that provide information on Swine flu so that international arrivals have information about the outbreak and what to do should they become sick.

Besser said that controlling an outbreak will take a shared responsibility of health officials and the community. He said if someone gets sick and has a fever, or their children are sick, they should stay home. He also said parents should give some thought to what they would do if their children's school needs to close or if they can work from home.

Businesses also should use this time to consider possible implications about an outbreak, including contingency planning if some workers stay home, he said.
