Crash closes Kamehameha in both directions near Waiahole Homestead Road

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters estimate that Kamehameha Highway will remain closed in both directions for another 90 minutes while crews remove the 50 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled after an accident involving a fuel truck and a grease trap pumping truck, authorities said.

Initial reports indicated the truck was carrying 700 gallons of diesel fuel and it was leaking onto the roadway onto Kamehameha Highway between Kaimalolo Place and Waiahole Homestead Road.

Bryan Cheplic, of the city's emergency services department, said two people have been taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

A Honolulu Fire Department hazardous materials team with absorbent material is on the scene, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

"There is no fire or environmental harm posed at this time," Seelig said. "It doesn't appear to be a large leak, but it is impacting the highway."

A typical fuel tanker carries about 1,500 gallons of fuel.
