Parasailer killed in 40-foot fall was Honolulu man

The man who died in a parasailing accident at Maunalua Bay Tuesday has been identified as Cole Ciliax, 24, of Honolulu.

Ciliax, an employee of SeaBreeze Watersports, and a passenger were both aloft when Ciliax fell at least 40 feet to the ocean, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. John Titchen said.

Ciliax was recovered in 20 to 30 feet of water about a quarter-mile offshore, given CPR and transferred to a hospital, where he later died, according to Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Services Department spokesman.

The Coast Guard has begun an extensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident, Titchen said.

While not subject to annual inspection, the SeaBreeze boat did receive random spot checks to confirm a sound passenger-safety plan, an employee drug/alcohol policy and other requirements. The last check was made earlier this year, Titchen said.
