Diesel spill snarls traffic on Kamehameha Highway

Windward O'ahu traffic was jammed for hours yesterday after about 50 gallons of diesel spilled onto Kamehameha Highway near Waiahole Valley when a tanker truck collided with another truck.

The tanker was carrying about 600 gallons of diesel when it and a grease pumper truck collided about 1:10 p.m. No one was seriously injured, but the collision caused the RHS Lee tanker to leak fuel.

Fire department crews were able to contain the spill to the shoulder area of the highway and prevent the fuel from reaching any water sources, said Capt. Terry Seelig, HFD spokesman. A private contractor was called to clean up the spill.

Police initially closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions, but later opened one lane for contraflow traffic.
