Panel recommends approval of city plan to expand, extend life of Honolulu landfill

Advertiser Staff

The city Planning Commission on Friday voted 6-2 to recommend approval of a special use permit for extension and expansion of the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill.

The matter now goes to the state Land Use Commission, which will make the final decision.
The city wants to double the acreage of the landfill and extend its life indefinitely.
The landfill, Oçahu’s only municipal dump, is scheduled to close on Nov. 1 under an existing permit. City officials argued that there is no other option but to expand the landfill, at least not now.
The application is being opposed by the Ko Olina Community Association.
