The 26th National Night Out is Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Target in Salt Lake. Volunteers from across O'ahu will take part in several citizens patrols before gathering at Target, where residents and Honolulu police officers will celebrate police-community partnerships with live entertainment and games. BOYS & GIRLS CLUB MEMBERS GET SURFING LESSONS FROM LOCAL PROS AT FREE CLINIC

More than 50 Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii youth from Nanakuli, Wai'anae and the Kahikolu Homeless Shelter enjoyed a day of one-on-one surfing lessons from 30 of Hawai'i's top surfers during a recent clinic at White Plains Beach. The youth were taught water safety and general wave knowledge as well as specific techniques for paddling, body boarding and surfing from Brian Keaulana, Brock Little, Aaron Napoleon and others. VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION SET FOR THURSDAY FOR PROGRAM THAT HELPS FOSTER CHILDREN

Family Programs Hawai'i will hold a volunteer orientation from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at 680 Ala Moana, Suite 200, for anyone interested in helping foster children. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate visits with siblings, run activities and tutor children four to eight hours a month. Volunteers receive training, must have no criminal convictions, a clean driver's abstract and be at least 18 years of age. KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS FRESHMEN HELP PULL INVASIVE PLANTS AT HALEAKALA PARK

As part of Pacific Whale Foundation's Volunteering on Vacation program, a group of 124 Kamehameha Schools incoming freshmen participated in a volunteer service project at Haleakala National Park July 24. The students and their faculty chaperones learned about the national park's efforts to protect native flora and fauna, and worked to remove invasive pine trees from the park. LIBRARY WORKSHOPS AT WAIMANALO, 'AINA HAINA ON IDENTITY THEFT, FINANCIAL LITERACY

Two O'ahu libraries will offer informational workshops this month about identity theft and financial literacy awareness. Admission is free.
