Islanders capture West World Series

Triston Siarot-Koa doubled and homered as the Makakilo/Kapolei Islanders defeated host Chino Hills, Calif., 5-3, yesterday to capture the 10-under division of the United States Special Sports Association (USSSA) Western World Series.

Markus Ramos and Nainoa Perez each had two hits for the Islanders, who finished 7-0 in the 14-team tournament.

MILILANI ADVANCES

Rayson Romero had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, as Mililani beat host Chino Hills, Calif., 5-4, yesterday to finish unbeaten in pool play at the P.O.N.Y. Pony 13 World Series.

Tanner Tokunaga added two hits and Jensen Kim hit an RBI single and scored on a groundout to spice a two-run sixth inning for Mililani (3-0), which plays Channahon, Ill. (2-1) today at 1:30 p.m. (Hawai'i time). The winner advances to the championship game at 4 p.m.

Kyle Camp, Texas (3-0) plays Bergen Beach, N.Y. (2-1) in other half of the bracket.

HILO ELIMINATED

Robbey Meguro fired a four-hitter with four strikeouts as Hilo beat Scottsdale, Ariz., 7-2, yesterday in the P.O.N.Y. Pony (ages 13-14) West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

RJ Iyo, Dean Hosaka, Alika Guillermo and Rex Daquep each had two hits for Hilo (2-1), which was eliminated from tourney play because Riverside (Calif.) went 3-0 in the same pool, including a win over Hilo.

WINDWARD OUSTED

Simi Valley (Calif.) defeated Windward, 7-4, yesterday to eliminate the Hawai'i team from the P.O.N.Y. Bronco (ages 11-12) West Zone Tournament at Whittier, Calif.

Robb Risso, Ryder Kuhns and Jordan Yamamoto each had a hit for Windward, which finished 4-2.

GOLF

SHIGEZAWA NINTH

Punahou School senior Bradley Shigezawa shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 yesterday to finish ninth at the Optimist International Junior Championships yesterday in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Shigezawa finished at 3-over-par 291. A.J. Crouch, of Jacksonville, Fla., won the boys 16-18 division with 71—281.

Honolulu's Brian Lee (77—300) tied for 30th and Waipahu's Christian Agosto (77—306) tied for 44th.

Chihiro Ikeda, of the Philippines, won the girls division with 73—283.

TENNIS

CHING, TU TRIUMPH

Torin Ching and Tommy Tu defeated Laurent Colombo and Mangal Sriram, 7-6 (1), 6-3, last night in the first round of the main draw of the Kailua Racquet Club's Men's Night Doubles tournament.

In other matches, Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen beat Muka Godinet and Frank Godinet, 6-1, 6-3; and Jay Grollman and Jan Hroch beat Brett Krueger and Evan Loya, 6-2, 6-3. Jeff Fitch and Daniel Llarenas were tied with Alex Aybar and Blake Mosley, 6-4, 3-6, 2-2, at deadline.

CLINIC ON SATURDAY

Minh Le and Wei-Yu Su, who are attempting to win a record fourth straight Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles title, will be featured at a tennis clinic Saturday. The event is open to juniors (ages 7-17) and takes place at Boys & Girls Club Spalding Facility (1704 Waiola St.), from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
