WAILUKU — Although letters to the court described a 45-year-old Lahaina man as "caring, compassionate, helpful," he showed none of those qualities the night he raped a woman, a deputy prosecutor said.

"He showed her no mercy," said Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Martin. "He should receive no mercy today."
Alexander Ayau Wilsey was sentenced Tuesday to a 20-year prison term.
He had pleaded no contest to first-degree sexual assault of the woman, which occurred around 11 p.m. Feb. 5.
The woman, who knows Wilsey, reported that he had picked her up in Lahaina and drove to a dirt road leading to a beach near Launiupoko Park. She said she had asked to be taken home before Wilsey got a knife from the glove compartment, used it to cut off her shorts, then held the knife against her throat as he raped her.
Afterward, she said, Wilsey drove back toward Lahaina and let her out by the side of a road.
Defense attorney David Peterson said Wilsey cooperated with a police investigation and was remorseful.
In exchange for Wilsey's plea to the sexual assault charge, the prosecution dismissed a kidnapping charge.
"I have a problem," Wilsey said in court Tuesday. "I didn't address it or didn't realize it until something really bad happened. I have a real big problem with alcohol. I'm really sorry about everything."
In imposing the sentence, 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza told Wilsey it was important that he get help for drug and alcohol problems, as well as deeper issues in his life.
"This was an extremely violent crime," Cardoza said. "It warrants the penalty that you will be receiving.
"Don't just do your time, put your time to use."
According to court records, Wilsey's criminal history includes 33 convictions, including ones for first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and abuse.
