Single women over 60 will be returning to the stage to perform monologues about aging in a culture that worships youth.

"Aging Is Not For Sissies" was created by Honolulu psychologist Pratibha Eastwood when she was approaching her 65th birthday and decided to challenge the notion that women over 60 don't have "one foot in the grave," as she describes it.

The concert-reader's-theater-style performances are Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. at Hawai'i Pacific University's Paul and Vi Loo Theatre in Kane'ohe. Tickets are $15 general, $10 for students and seniors 65 and older. For reservations, call 375-1282.

POETRY SLAM

FREEWHEELING WITH QUADRAPHONIX

Quadraphonix will be part of the mix at tonight's First Thursday HawaiiSlam show at Pipeline Café, the last "no rules" poetry slam of the summer.

The musical group is a little bit avant-garde, with funk, Latin and Indian grooves, and has opened up for the Black Eyed Peas, Ozomatli and Eek-A-Mouse.

As for the poetry, anything goes: team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props and whatever else you need to express your creativity. Grand prize winner takes home $100.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $3 until the show starts at 8:30; then it's $5 for the rest of the night.

For more information, call 387-9664, e-mail info@HawaiiSlam.com or visit www.HawaiiSlam.com to find out more about the event and what you need to compete.
