A World War II artillery shell uncovered in Kilohana Crater on Kaua'i was detonated Tuesday by soldiers from Schofield Barracks' explosive disposal unit.

A Kipu rancher clearing land with a bulldozer in Kilohana Crater uncovered the shell, Kaua'i Police Chief Darryl Perry said in a news release.

The shell was 20 inches long and 5 1/2 inches in diameter.

The rancher, William Fleming, called police, who notified the U.S. Army's 706th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit at Schofield Barracks.

Two members of the unit — Sgt. Aaron Smeathers and PFC Douglas Shotts — arrived on Kaua'i on Tuesday afternoon.

After examining the shell, which probably was used for training, the soldiers detonated it by remote control.
