Kono advances at U.S. Amateur

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono was the only Hawai'i golfer to advance after the opening round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at St. Louis.

Kono won the first three holes and cruised to a 7-and-6 victory over Alexandra Stewart of Peoria, Ariz.

Hilo's Kimberly Kim, who won this event in 2006, lost 5 and 3 to Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Canada, and Wailuku's Cassy Isagawa lost 4 and 2 to Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash.

Kono will play Stephanie Sherlock of Canada in the second round today. If Kono wins, she will play a Round of 16 match later in the day.

YOUTH BASEBALL

HILO SENIORS ROCK

Brad Waiki allowed one run in four innings with seven strikeouts, and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam, Taylor Goo and Brendan Owings drove in two runs apiece as Hilo beat Laurel, Mont., 10-3, in the Little League Seniors (ages 14-15) West Regional at Ontario, Calif.

Hilo put the game away with a six-run sixth inning.

Hilo (2-0) will play Sitka, Alaska, tomorrow at 1 p.m. (Hawai'i time).

HILO JUNIORS ROLL

Quintin Torres-Costa and Keoni Chiquita drove in three runs each as Hilo routed Turner, Ore., 16-0, in the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) West Regional yesterday at Aliso Viejo, Calif.

Four Hilo pitchers combined on a five-inning two-hitter.

Drew Kell and Randall Iha both had two-run singles in Hilo's five run first. Chiquita had a three-run triple during a seven-run second.

Hilo (2-0) will play Nampa, Idaho, today at 9:30 a.m. (Hawai'i time).

TENNIS

SEMIFINALS SET

The second-seeded team of Mika Maata and Jan Axel Tribler defeated Stefan Pampulov and Harald Rittersbacher last night in a quarterfinal match of the Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Maata and Tribler prevailed 6-2, retired after Rittersbacher pulled a thigh muscle and couldn't continue.

In another quarterfinal, fourth-seeded Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen beat Torin Ching and Tommy Tu, 7-5, 7-6 (4).

The semifinals will be held tomorrow, starting at 6.

VOLLEYBALL

Bourne sparks U.S.

Honolulu's Tri Bourne scored 14 points, but the United States fell to Cuba, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23, yesterday in the second round of pool play at the FIVB Men's Junior World Championships in Pune, India.

Team USA is 0-2 in the second round and 2-3 overall. It will play Iran in its final second-round match today before finishing in the classification playoffs for fifth to eighth place.
