Man faces 7 counts in prostitution case

An O'ahu grand jury has indicted a Waikiki man on seven counts of kidnapping, assault, promoting prostitution and extortion for allegedly forcing a woman into prostitution in Waikiki.

Charles Cocklin II, 28, was indicted Wednesday for crimes that allegedly occurred from May through July. He is accused of forcing one woman to work as a prostitute in Waikiki. He allegedly broke another woman's jaw and beat her, police said. He demanded $1,000 from her and threatened to cut her and kill another woman if she didn't work as a prostitute for him.

A state judge set his bail at $250,000.

One of the women told police she met Cocklin at the Pipeline Cafe parking lot at 3 a.m. June 1. The woman exchanged phone numbers with Cocklin, and they went on a date about a month later and he came to her 'Ewa Beach home.

They met a couple more times, and the woman described him as a friend. It wasn't until later that Cocklin allegedly asked the woman if she would "walk the track, which meant walking the street for the purpose of prostitution," according to court documents. The woman refused.

Cocklin allegedly threatened her that he'd kidnap her and cut her because she refused to do what he wanted. Later Cocklin told her she owed him $1,000 because that is "what his (prostitutes) can make a night."

Another woman, who identified herself as a prostitute, told police and prosecutors a similar story of abuse and assault by Cocklin.

Cocklin is on parole on a California felony conviction. California authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest for a parole violation.

Because Cocklin is considered a multiple offender, he may face an extended term if convicted of the seven Hawai'i criminal counts, court documents said.
