Preparation best option

With a little luck, Hurricane Felicia will skirt the Islands, leaving us with nothing more than strong winds and wet weather. But just crossing our fingers isn't enough. Vigilance and preparation are key this El Niño-year hurricane season.

And there's no better time than the present to get things in order.

State Civil Defense officials offer some simple tips. First, be informed. Monitor the storm's path and be prepared to act quickly. That means having a family disaster plan in place — and making sure all family members are in the loop.

Other preparations to make:

• Have a supply kit with enough food and water for seven days that includes medicine (including prescription medicine) toiletries, clothes, blankets, a radio, a flashlight, batteries and pet supplies.

• Locate the shelter nearest you; a list is available at www.scd.hawaii.gov or call 733-4300 for information.

"This preparedness is not only important during hurricane season, but throughout the year," said Major Gen. Robert Lee, the adjutant general and director of State Civil Defense.

So take the time to get prepared now. Keeping our families and neighbors safe is well worth the effort.
