3 from Hawaii Tenri win gold at Junior U.S. Open

     • Hawaii in third at Billabong ISA Games

    Three Hawai'i judoka, all from the Hawai'i Tenri Club, earned gold medals at the Junior U.S. Open, which concluded Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. More than 600 juniors competed in the two-day international event.

    Hawai'i swept the top three places in the 97-pound female division, with Honolulu's Taylor Ibera winning, Nicole Taniguchi coming in second and Erin Uehara third.

    In the men's divisions, Dane Pestano, from Waimanalo, won at 220 pounds and Arnold Toriumi, from Honolulu, won at 132 pounds.

    Sisters Mindy and Chrissy Chow finished 2-3 in the 126-pound division. Other third-place winners from Hawai'i were Kaimana Lundquist, Anthony Kwon and Chad Taniguchi.

    CALIFORNIA & HAWAI'I TIDES BASEBALL TRYOUTS

    California & Hawai'i Tides Baseball will hold a U18 tryout for its travel teams this weekend at Koko Head District Park.

    The first session is tomorrow with a workout from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a simulation game from 1 to 2 p.m.

    A second session will be held Sunday with a workout and simulation game from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Tryout fee is $20, which includes lunch, and the fee is waived for Neighbor Island players.

    The coaching staff includes head coach Jeff Bermudez, current Northwestern player and Punahou alum Paul Snieder, and Penn State and Punahou alum Landon Nakata.

    Registration can be done in advance by contacting coach jeff@baseballfarm.com or 298-4767.

    Players must attend both session unless they notify in advance. Ground transportation can be provided if notified in advance.

    'IOLANI ALUM SECOND IN FOUR-PERSON KAYAK

    'Iolani alum Giulia Anderson was a member of the U.S. women's K4 kayak team that finished second in the B final at the International Canoe Federation Junior Canoe Sprint World Championship in Moscow on Aug. 2.

    Anderson, along with Cannie Ash, Morgan Smith and Katelyn Dill, finished the 500-meter race in 1:42.257.

    More than 500 athletes from 52 countries participated in canoe and kayak events.

    Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club will hold boys volleyball tryouts on Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 at Hawai'i Baptist Academy. Times on Aug. 29 are: 12 years-and-under (noon to 2 p.m.), 13-14 (2 to 4:30 p.m.) and 15-16 (4:30 to 7 p.m.). Tryouts for 17-18-year olds will be Sept. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. No fee.
