An 80-year-old man was hospitalized for smoke inhalation this morning after an apartment fire in Pearl City.

HFD Capt. Robert Main said the man was sitting in his 4th-floor apartment at 950 Lehua Ave. when the room started to fill with smoke. Neighbors helped him get out of the apartment and used fire equipment stored in the hallways to stifle the fire, Main said.

Firefighetrs arrived at 10:45 a.m. and had the fire extinguished by 10:50 a.m.

EMS Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the man was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition and treated for smoke inhalation.

Main said damages were $60,000 and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
