Tropical storm and flash flood watches in effect as weakened Felicia creeps closer

Advertiser Staff

A tropical storm watch for the Big Island and Maui County and a flash flood watch for all major islands are in effect as Hurricane Felicia continues to progress toward Hawai'i.

Though still classified as a Category 1 hurricane, Felicia has been slowly weakening and is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm by today.
Felicia now has maximum sustained wind speeds of 80 mph, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said in an 11 p.m. update.
The tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions (including winds of 30 miles per hour or greater) are possible in the designated areas, generally within the next 48 hours.
The center said the tropical storm watch could extend to other islands as Felicia draws closer.
Felicia is expected to reach the Big Island on Monday.
At 11 a.m. yesterday, an Air Force reconnaissance aicraft located Felicia about 845 miles east of Hilo and about 1,025 miles east of Honolulu. By 11 p.m., the hurricane had advanced to within 675 miles of Hilo and 855 miles of Honolulu.
Even if it weakens as expected, the storm could still bring heavy rains, high surf and possible flash flooding Monday through Wednesday, forecasters have said.
