No threat of tsunami from Santa Cruz Islands earthquake

Advertiser Staff

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the Santa Cruz Islands, which lie north of the archipelago of Vanuatu, this evening, does not pose any tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The earthquake occurred at 6:07 p.m. today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which operates at Ewa Beach, issued the advisory following the earthquake. Hawaii is often threatened by tsunamis following earthquakes that originate from seismically active areas around the Pacific, such as Alaska's Aleutian Island chain and the west coast of South America.
