Randall, Flanagan swim to victory

Kane'ohe's Rachel Randall was the first female finisher at the North Shore Challenge yesterday at Waimea Bay and earned the overall North Shore Swim Series female title.

John Flanagan captured yesterday's race in 44 minutes, 10 seconds.

Cyrus Hashemi was the second male overall in 47:16, while Tom Lileikis was third in 47:28. Lileikis earned the overall series title.

Randall finished the 2.3-mile swim in 50:56, ahead of Samantha Strohmeyer in 52:17 and Kristen Johns in 53:46.

Lileikis won the four-race title in 2:09:10. Randall won the women's title in 2:18:16.3.

SURFING

TEAM HAWAI'I FOURTH

Team Hawai'i finished in fourth place in the team standings of the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games yesterday at Costa Rica.

The final day of the eight-day competition was completed in 1- to 2-foot waves at Playa Hermosa.

Hank Gaskell of Maui and Kekoa Uemura of Honolulu were both eliminated in the semifinals yesterday. Gaskell was eliminated in the open men's division; Uemura was eliminated in the longboard division.

The United States won the team championship. Hawai'i was recognized as its own region, separate from the United States, for the contest.

Individual champions were Jeremy Flores of France in open men, Courtney Conlogue of the United States in open women, and Antoine Delpero of France in longboarding.

Each country could use eight surfers: four in open men, two in open women and two in longboarding.

More than 180 surfers representing 34 countries/regions participated in the event. It is often referred to as the Olympics of surfing.

WOMEN'S CHAMPS

Keisha Kanekoa scored 25 points to lead Plumbing Source to the D.One NCAA Women's Summer League basketball championship last night with a 53-47 win over Big Ben Entertainment at Manoa Recreation Center.
