NEW YORK — CC Sabathia shut down the Boston Red Sox just like A.J. Burnett did, putting the New York Yankees in position for a pivotal four-game sweep.

Sabathia didn't allow a runner past second base while pitching into the eighth inning and New York beat Boston 5-0 for its sixth consecutive win yesterday.

Derek Jeter hit an opposite-field, two-run homer in the eighth for the Yankees, who extended their AL East lead to a season-high 5 1/2 games. Robinson Cano finished with three hits.

"When you pitch, you're always going to have a chance to win," Jeter said.

Jacoby Ellsbury lined a clean single to center with two outs in the sixth for Boston's first hit off Sabathia (12-7), who improved to 4-1 in his last five starts. The big left-hander got a standing ovation from the sellout crowd, and promptly struck out Dustin Pedroia to end the inning.

Sabathia allowed two hits, walked two and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings, tying his season high of 123 pitches set June 11 in a loss at Fenway Park and matching Burnett's terrific outing in Friday night's 2-0 victory.

"A.J. definitely set the tone," Sabathia said. "I was just trying to do the same thing and be the 1-2 punch that we came here, you know, to be."

ANGELS 3, RANGERS 2:

Jered Weaver pitched into the eighth inning for the first time in his last 10 starts and matched a career high with his second straight 11-strikeout performance, and host Los Angeles moved 4 1/2 games ahead of Texas in the AL West.

Weaver (12-3) allowed two runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings, including Hank Blalock's two-run homer in the fifth.

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 2, 10 innings: Adam Lind hit a one-out double in the 10th inning to score the winning run, and host Toronto beat Baltimore.

Joe Inglett led off the inning with a single off Danys Baez (4-6), and after he was forced out at second on a bunt by Marco Scutaro, Aaron Hill singled. Lind followed with a double off the wall in left.

ROYALS 12, ATHLETICS 6:

Zack Greinke earned his first win over an American League club since May 26, Mike Jacobs and Billy Butler each drove in three runs and host Kansas City defeated Oakland.

Greinke (11-7) went seven innings and yielded three runs on seven hits to pick up his first victory since June 28.

WHITE SOX 8, INDIANS 5:

Jim Thome hit a two-run shot for his 562nd career homer and Gordon Beckham had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth, helping host Chicago rally from a three-run deficit against Cleveland.

D.J. Carrasco (4-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the White Sox moved within two games of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

TWINS 11, TIGERS 0:

Carl Pavano (10-8) allowed only five hits over seven innings in his Minnesota debut, Denard Span went 5 for 5 and Joe Mauer homered and drove in three runs to lift Minnesota over host Detroit.

Jose Mijares and Glen Perkins completed the six-hitter with an inning each for third-place Minnesota, which moved to within 4 1/2 games of first place Detroit in the AL Central.

RAYS 10, MARINERS 4:

Evan Longoria broke a 3-all tie with a 411-foot solo homer and Carlos Pena added a two-run shot in Tampa Bay's win over host Seattle.

Longoria's 24th homer came in the fifth inning and gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Pena went deep off Seattle reliever Chris Jakubauskas for his 28th homer of the season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

GIANTS 4, REDS 2:

Bengie Molina homered among his three hits and drove in three runs, and Barry Zito (8-10) gave up two runs in six innings in helping host San Francisco beat Cincinnati.

Eugenio Velez also connected as the Giants won their fifth in seven games. Fred Lewis added two hits.

NATIONALS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2:

Garrett Mock (1-4) allowed two runs in six innings for his first win of the season, Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer and host Washington won its seventh straight game, beating Arizona.

The Nationals' seven-game run is their longest since a 10-game streak from June 2-12, 2005.

BREWERS 12, ASTROS 5:

Prince Fielder and Mike Rivera drove in three runs apiece and visiting Milwaukee torched Houston's bullpen for nine runs.

Fielder hit his 27th home run, Ryan Braun had a two-run single and Casey McGehee, Bill Hall and Felipe Lopez added RBIs for the Brewers, who finished with 14 hits.

MARLINS 6, PHILLIES 4:

Cody Ross hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Cole Hamels (7-7) in the sixth inning and Florida beat host Philadelphia.

The Marlins moved within five games of the NL East-leading Phillies and try to complete the three-game sweep with ace Josh Johnson on the mound today.

CARDINALS 5, PIRATES 3:

Albert Pujols hit a three-run double to reach the 100 RBIs mark for the ninth consecutive time to start his career and Adam Wainwright (13-7) limited Pittsburgh to one run over 6 2/3 innings, leading St. Louis past host Pittsburgh.

Pujols hit a bases-loaded double down the left-field line that made it 5-0 in the sixth inning.

CUBS 6, ROCKIES 5:

Kosuke Fukudome and Derrek Lee homered, leading Chicago past host Colorado.

The win allowed the Cubs to remain a game behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central and snapped the Rockies' 15-game winning streak over teams from that division.

PADRES 3, METS 1:

Rookie Mat Latos (4-1) allowed four hits in six innings to win his fourth consecutive start and lead host San Diego over New York.

Everth Cabrera, who hit a grand slam in the ninth inning of Friday night's 6-2 win over the Mets, drew a bases-loaded walk from reliever Nelson Figueroa in the third inning to put San Diego ahead 2-1.

BRAVES 2, DODGERS 1, 10 INNINGS:

Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning against Guillermo Mota (3-3) and Atlanta beat host Los Angeles for its second straight extra-inning victory over the NL West leaders.

Johnson, who pinch-hit in the eighth for second baseman Diory Hernandez and remained in the game, drove a 1-1 pitch a couple of rows behind the short fence in the right field corner for his eighth home run after a one-out walk to Adam LaRoche.
