HPU to audition for ‘Quiptease’

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Pacific University is auditioning next month for “Quiptease” by Yokanaan Kearns, which will run Nov. 6 to Dec. 6.

The production will be the world premiere of a new comedy written by the award-winning author of “Pidg Latin,” “Dis/Troy” and “Maui vs. Hercules.”
The summary of the show: Just out of college, Gwendolyn is looking forward to an orderly life in Los Angeles: a career, retirement and death. But her tidy plan for the future unravels quickly when her mother returns from Hawai'i with a boyfriend named Lohi'au. And just when Gwendolyn thinks it can't get worse, her father suddenly declares that he wishes to be called Mr. March, unleashes invective on everyone in sight, and reveals Gwendolyn's most carefully guarded secret: that she yearns for the disorderly life of a poet.

Roles sought in the production are:
HENRY: fifties or sixties; handsome ex-Navy captain; grumpy and laconic until his transformation into the witty and sarcastic Mr. March.
GWENDOLYN: early twenties; Henry's daughter; confident about her intelligence, unsure of her beauty.
NIKITA: early twenties; faithful friend to Gwendolyn; handsome and knows it; aspiring painter; dumb but adorable.
FELICIA: fifties; Gwendolyn's mother; calls herself Pele; vivacious yet flighty and flaky.
LOHI'AU: late forties; Hawaiian fisherman who's a fish out of water in LA; loves to gamble.
JAKE: early twenties; Lohi'au's son; will start medical school at UCLA in a few months.
JANDEEN: early forties; Jake's mother; doesn't realize she's no longer the beauty she once was; demanding and stubborn.

Auditions will consist of readings from the script. Scripts will be available for review on the premises at the windward and downtown HPU campus libraries.
Audition dates are: 7 p.m. Sept. 11 and noon on Sept. 12 and 13.
Rehearsals are scheduled for Monday through Friday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. and some weekend days as needed.

Auditions, rehearsals and performances are held in HPU's windward campus Paul and Vi Loo Theatre at 45-045 Kamehameha Highway (just off the Pali Highway).
