Maui County revises emergency shelter openings

Maui County this afternoon announced a revised list of shelter openings after the National weather Service reported a change in expected onset times of Tropical Storm Felicia.

Shelters were originally scheduled to open at 4 p.m. today. They are now slated to open at 10 p.m. tonight, staffed by the American Red Cross. Pet services will be available at all Maui island shelters, provided by the Maui Humane Society; pets must be contained in pet carriers.

Available shelters on Maui County:
ON MAUI:
Hana School Gym, Hana
War Memorial Gym, Wailuku
Kihei Community Center, Kihei
Lahaina Civic Center, Lahaina
Eddie Tam Gym, Makawao
Haiku Community Center, Haiku

ON MOLOKAI:
Molokai High School Gym
Mitchell Pauole Community Center

ON LANAI:
Lanai High School Gym

The county’s Emergency Operating Center was activated today at noon and will be staffed through the night. County officials also announced a number of closures and cancellations for tomorrow in conjunction with anticipated weather conditions.

County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation:
All county of Maui parks, Waiehu Golf Course, county campgrounds and swimming pools will be closed tomorrow. Facilities are scheduled to remain closed Wednesday; they will be reopened as soon as possible.

County of Maui Dept. of Housing and Human Concerns:
All congregate lunch sites, with the exception of those operating under the auspices of Maui Adult Day Care, will be closed as a precautionary measure tomorrow.

A map of areas susceptible to flooding will be available later this evening on the County of Maui Web site at www.mauicounty.gov.
