UCLA freshman Dalton Hilliard, a former Punahou football standout, said he is progressing well from arthroscopic surgery he underwent on his right knee July 17 to remove bone fragments from a pre-existing injury.

"I'm starting to work out and do some individual stuff on the side," Hilliard said. "I'm probably about 95 percent now and hopefully I can get back into practice this week."

The surgery was performed at the UCLA Medical Center.

"It was pretty simple and I got out of there pretty fast," said Hilliard, a 6-foot, 195-pounder, whose position is listed as athlete on the Bruins' roster.

Hilliard said there are no immediate plans to redshirt him, but that "it's still a possibility."

As a senior last year, Hilliard caught 63 passes for 725 yards with eight touchdowns and rushed for 599 yards and 10 TDs to help Punahou win its first state football championship.

The Bruins, coming off a disappointing 4-8 record last season — including a 3-6 mark in the Pac-10 — began fall camp Monday. UCLA opens against San Diego State on Sept. 5.
