Track and field: Pole vault champ Hooker hurts leg ahead of worlds

Associated Press

BERLIN — Australian Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker is uncertain for the world championships because of a leg injury.

Hooker strained the adductor in his right leg during training Monday and team doctors are fighting to get him fit for the Aug. 20 qualifying session.
He said on the Web site of Athletics Australia on Thursday that he was “50/50 at best of competing. We are going to do whatever we can to treat it aggressively.”
With 19.5 feet, Hooker is the season’s second-best performer behind France’s Renaud Lavillenie.
The championships in Berlin will be held Aug. 15-23.
