Big Island firefighters cut trail into forest to find lost hikers

Advertiser Staff

HILO — Hawaii County fire rescue personnel located and retrieved three lost hikers yesterday in a heavily forested area in Pahoa.

The hikers used a cell phone to call for help. Firefighters determined their location — about 300 yards off Kaohe Homestead Road — and then cut a trail into the forest to where the hikers were.
