Public welcome to take part in Remembrance Walk

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann is inviting the public to participate in the fourth annual Mayor's Remembrance Walk on Sept. 6, in observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

"As we approach the eighth anniversary of the attacks on our country, we must honor those who perished that day and recognize the first responders and members of the armed forces who continue to ensure our safety," Hannemann said in a statement.

Marchers should gather at the entrance of the Honolulu Police Department headquarters, 801 S. Beretania St., by 6:30 p.m.

The walk will be led by a procession of bagpipe and drum players and includes brief ceremonies and wreath presentations beginning at the police department. Marchers will proceed makai on Alapa'i Street to the Honolulu Fire Department, at South and Queen streets, for a second ceremony. The procession will then move makai to Halekauwila Street and then mauka on Punchbowl Street to Honolulu Hale for a formal ceremony.

Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights. Parking will be available at the Civic Center parking structure; enter from South Beretania Street.
