Memorial for Tom Gill scheduled for tonight

Advertiser Staff

Former Hawaiçi legislator, lieutenant governor and U.S. Congressman Tom Gill will be remembered tonight, 5 to 7:30 p.m., at a gathering at Church of the Crossroads.

Gill, who died on July 3 at the age of 87, was a major player in the rise of the local Democratic Party and played an instrumental role in the landmark 1964 U.S. Civil Rights Act. He is also credited with championing land reform laws that helped control development and expand housing opportunities for Hawaiçi residents and antitrust statues that helped to break the social and political monopoly held by the Big Five companies.
