University of Hawai'i athletic director Jim Donovan said he does not currently expect to have to lay off staff or coaches in the wake of further schoolwide financial cutbacks.

UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said in a memo this week that layoff notices could go out Sept. 1 to an undisclosed number of UH employees in the wake of a 6 percent slice in state funding.

Of its $28.34 million budget, the athletic department said it receives approximately $1.5 million annually in state funding. Donovan said that between earlier announced cuts and the latest round he expects to lose roughly $150,000.

The remainder of UH's operating funds are self generated coming from ticket sales, media rights, sponsorships and donations, a spokesman said.

Donovan said his department has been leaving a number of positions unfilled since last fall. He said all but two of nine areas within the department have left multiple positions vacant. "We'll try to make additional adjustments as best we can under the circumstances," Donovan said. "We've asked our coaches and staff to economize where they can."

The Manoa campus is looking at cuts of approximately $45 million from general funds.
