Hurricane Guillermo weakens, may pass well north of Hawaii

Advertiser Staff

Hurricane Guillermo weakened as a Category 2 hurricane last night, with maximum sustained winds near 98 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

At 11 p.m. yesterday, Guillermo was about 1,160 miles east of Hilo, Hawai'i.

Guillermo had reached Category 3 strength late Friday but weakened throughout the day yesterday. Further weakening is expected today and tomorrow as the storm moves over cooler water.

The system has been moving toward the west-northwest at about 14 mph, and is expected to cross into the Central Pacific Hurricane Center's area of responsibility around midday today.

Forecasters have said the storm is not expected to have any direct impact on the state's weather. But it may cause hot muggy conditions and high surf on windward shores by midweek.

The National Hurricane Center's projection has the storm hundreds of miles to the northeast of the Big Island on Tuesday afternoon as a tropical storm.
