NHL: Blackhawks star Kane apologizes after cab incident

WOODRIDGE, Ill. — Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane apologized Monday for the pain he caused those close to him after his arrest on charges that he and a cousin beat up a cab driver in Buffalo, N.Y., earlier this month.

The 20-year-old Kane said he knows everyone wanted to talk about the Aug. 9 incident, but he could not discuss details because of pending legal proceedings.

"Because I put myself in being in the wrong position in the wrong time, I've caused a lot of pain for my family and my hometown of Buffalo, the city of Chicago, the Chicago Blackhawks and obviously the great fans we have here in Chicago," Kane said. "And for that part I sincerely apologize."

He did not take questions and said simply it was "time for me to move forward" as he wrapped up the media appearance before the start of the U.S. Olympic men's hockey orientation camp in suburban Chicago.

A grand jury is expected to decide this week whether Kane should face criminal charges after a dispute that left the cab driver in his hometown bruised and with broken glasses. The incident happened before dawn on a Sunday.

Brian Burke, general manager of the U.S. men's Olympic team, said the incident "does not affect my judgment of Patrick Kane."

"I do believe character is a vital element in putting together a winning team. I've always stressed it. I always will," Burke said. "I think it's possible for a young man to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and make a poor decision. I know when I was Patrick Kane's age I did a couple of things I would not want to talk about up here."

Burke said he has spoken briefly with Kane and believes the young star is focused on camp.

Kane and his cousin, James Kane, were arrested by Buffalo police after 62-year-old cabbie Jan Radecki reported the pair beat him up when he told them he didn't have 20 cents change for the fare. The Kanes pleaded not guilty to robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft and criminal mischief.

The cabbie's attorney has said the incident was "blown out of proportion" and suggested the dispute can be worked out.

Kane, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft and the NHL rookie of the year in 2008, had 25 goals and 45 assists last season and his team has built a marketing campaign around him. As a rookie, he had 21 goals and 51 assists. He helped the Blackhawks advance to the Western Conference finals last season.

There are 34 players in camp, an initial step in picking the 23-player team for the Vancouver Olympics.
