Warning signs up at Kakaako Waterfront Park after sewage spill

Advertiser Staff

Warning signs were posted today about fishing or swimming along Kakaako Waterfront Park after 906 gallons of wastewater spilled into a storm drain, city officials said.

The spill at the Ala Moana No. 2 Pump Station on Keawe Street occurred shortly after 8 a.m. today and city officials posted warning signs from Point Panic thru Kakaako Waterfront Park to Fort Armstrong, said Markus Owens, spokesman for the city’s Department of Environmental Services.
An open valve caused a wet well at the pump station to overflow and spill 5,406 gallons of untreated wastewater to the ground. Crews recovered 4,500 gallons, with 906 gallons making its way to a storm drain, Owens said.
