Man injured after falling 100 feet down Kolekole Pass cliff

A man suffered serious injuries after he fell about 100 feet down a cliff and lodged in a tree yesterday afternoon on a trail along Kolekole Pass.

The man, 20, was hiking with two other males when he lost his footing and tumbled down the rock face, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman. Seelig said the man kept rolling until he became wedged in the yoke of a tree.
The man’s hiking companions called for help at about 2:10 p.m. Seelig said rescue crews had difficulties treating the man because of how he was positioned in the tree.
“They had to treat him and splint some broken bones and care for his injuries,” Seelig said. “At the same time they had to trim the tree away so they could get the rescue basket in close enough to put him in it and preserve the integrity of their splint.”
Fire personnel were able to get the man out of the tree and transfer him to ambulance personnel for treatment about two hours after the incident was reported. The hiker was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center.
