Stoplights not working on drive in from Kailua

Advertiser Staff

The stoplights were out at three major intersections on the drive into Honolulu from Kailua, motorists reported about 8:10 this morning.

One of the drivers said the lights were not working at Kailua Road and Kalanianaole Highway, Kalanianaole Highway and Kapaa Quarry Road, and at Castle Junction, where the Pali and Kamehameha highways intersect.
No police officers were at the intersections to direct traffic, the driver said.
Motorists were not treating the intersections as four-way stops, he said.
Groups of cars would push through the intersection until one of the drivers would yield to cross traffic, then a stream of cars would move through the intersection from the other direction.
It was not immediately clear what caused the outage and no estimate was available on how long it was expected to last.
