CFB: USC QB Corp on track to practice next week; no word on starter

By Michael Lev
The Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES — USC quarterback Aaron Corp appears to be on track to return to full-time duty next week. That would give him two weeks to prepare for the Sept. 5 season opener against San Jose State.

When Trojans coach Pete Carroll will decide on a starting quarterback remains anyone’s guess. Even Carroll isn’t sure.
“It’ll really just be a feeling,” he said Wednesday. “I don’t have any number of days. We’re going to wait and see how he (Corp) looks, see how confident he is and see if he’s ready and willing and able to execute.
“I’m not going to guess. I’m just going to wait until I feel it.
“I can’t tell you any more than that. I don’t know if there’s a plan for this thing. We don’t have one in mind right now.”
Freshman Matt Barkley again took all the first-team reps in practice, but Corp did his most extensive work since suffering a cracked left fibula Aug. 10.
Corp took drops at about three-quarters speed and threw routes to receivers. He is slated to participate in 7-on-7 passing drills Thursday morning.
“It keeps getting better, little by little, each day,” Corp said. “Today is the best it’s ever felt. Hopefully, it keeps progressing that way.”
Corp said he hopes to be able to run and take full-speed drops by the weekend. If that goes well, he should return to practice next week.
Is two weeks enough time to get ready?
“I think so,” Corp said. “I still would’ve rather had a whole camp, but I think two weeks would give me the right amount of time to prepare.”
Carroll said the coaching staff would “feel good” about going into the first game with Barkley as the starter. “But I want to get Aaron a real good shot to show he’s the No. 1 guy like he had been when he got hurt,”
Carroll said. “We’ll just see. I don’t know how long that takes.”

NOTES
Tight end Blake Ayles underwent a successful medical procedure for an arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, and is expected back “in a couple days,” Carroll said. ... Freshman James Boyd switched from defensive end to tight end, which is one of the Trojans’ thinnest positions with or without Ayles. ... Freshman defensive back Patrick Hall, in his first official practice, landed awkwardly and suffered a leg injury. ...
Freshman receiver De’Von Flournoy saw limited work because of a sprained wrist. ... Linebacker Jordan Campbell (back spasms) and receiver Jordan
Cameron (hamstring) remained out. ... With defensive tackle Averell Spicer (ankle) still out, nose tackles Jurrell Casey and Christian Tupou are playing together with the first team.
