Plan for Kona park to be presented

Community members will get a glimpse of the possible future of Old Kona Airport Park on Tuesday when planners unveil a master plan for the 117-acre recreation and beach area.

The Department of Parks and Recreation, along with planning consultant Kimura International, will present the $46.2 million plan, which was developed from a preferred plan selected by some 75 community members and stakeholders in May, for the park known to many as Old Kona Airport Park or Makaeo.

The presentation will feature architect's renderings of the plans.

The meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel's Ekahi Ballroom, will give the community an opportunity to review the final plan as the consultant completes an environmental assessment for the park.

At the meeting in May, Kimura International President Glenn Kimura projected the final master plan would be complete by August and an environmental assessment would be complete by December.

The preferred plan was developed from the second of three alternative plans presented to the community during a three-day planning exercise in May.

The preferred plan, adapted from the second alternative plan with input from the county, proposes a cultural preserve, a garden and interpretative center, a permanent skateboard park, a four-hale canoe halau, a senior center with a 25-yard pool and the removal of the 3,800-foot runway over the next 20 years.

The plan also incorporates reverse-angle parking, a bicycle and pedestrian path, a six-court tennis complex, an events pavilion and a possible dog park, which would be situated north of the existing Makaeo Walking Path.
