Rivalries old and new open the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West this weekend.

Meanwhile, the OIA White gets underway with an experimental afternoon starting time for one game.

But for most teams around the state, they are still in nonleague play.

OIA RED WEST

KAPOLEI VS. WAI'ANAE

Where/when: Raymond Torii Field (Wai'anae). Today, JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow. (Middle-third mauka bleach-ers were condemned by the state and unavailable.)

What: This was supposed to be a Kapolei home game, but renovations to visitor's bleachers are not complete. So for seventh time in eight meetings, the Hurricanes will travel. (The teams once played at Aloha Stadium for an OIA semifinal in '07.)

As new as Kapolei is, this rivalry is as good as any, with the Seariders leading the series, 5-3.

Kapolei is loaded with Division I prospects. Wai'anae showed some poise closing to within one TD after falling behind 35-0 in a 48-35 loss to Saint Louis last week.

WAIPAHU VS. CAMPBELL

Where/when: Campbell's stadium. Today, JV 5 p.m., varsity to follow. Parking $5.

What: Although Waipahu dominates this series, 30-9-1, Campbell has won four of the last five meetings and holds the coveted Cane Knife Trophy, which seems archaic since the one-time sugar plantation communities have turned into subdivisions.

It will be Waipahu's option with RB Victor Moananu against Campbell's passing attack led by RB/SB Samson Anguay.

LEILEHUA VS. MILILANI

Where/when: John Kauinana Stadium (Mililani). Tomorrow, JV 4 p.m., varsity to follow.

What: Leilehua leads the series, 19-11-1 and has won the last two meetings. But Mililani has won eight of the last 11. This rivalry is as good as it gets.

"It's like BYU and Utah," said Trojans' coach Darnell Arceneaux, the former Utes QB. "This (rivalry) splits families up. This is something special that we take to heart."

OIA WHITE

KALANI VS. 'AIEA

Where/when: 'Aiea stadium. Tomorrow, noon JV, varsity to follow.

What: It's not so much the matchup than the matinee starting time. It's an experi-ment by the league to see if day games are a viable option to save on electricity for lights.

NONLEAGUE

KAHUKU VS. PUNAHOU

Where/when: Aloha Stadium. Parking $3. Tomorrow, 7 p.m.

What: The defending Division I state champion Buffanblu make their season debut against the defending OIA Red champions.

Kahuku's Lopaka Morris looks like a deep threat with the pass and kickoff returns (81 and 69 yard returns for TDs vs. Kealakehe).

Punahou returns three all-state first-team picks: DB Sean McFadden, DL Sani Fuimaono and OL Kaiwi Crabb.
