LOS ANGELES — Randy Wolf knew it was a good sign when he retired the side on ground ball outs to start the game.

"I think I got out of there in eight pitches," he said. "I rarely get a lot of ground balls and I get three ground ball outs the first inning.

"Luck's an amazing thing. I'll take luck over being good anytime."

Wolf had a touch of both last night, combining with two relievers on a one-hitter and getting a two-run double in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs for their second straight victory.

The Cubs' season-low lone hit was Ryan Theriot's RBI single with two outs in the third. Chicago was held to one hit for the first time since Aug. 31, 2005, against Derek Lowe and the Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The NL West-leading Dodgers recorded consecutive victories for the first time since Aug. 10-11, when they won the first two of a three-game set at San Francisco.

    METS 4, PHILLIES 2

Jeff Francoeur homered, Mike Pelfrey (9-8) gave up two runs and six hits over six innings and Francisco Rodriguez struck out Chase Utley and Ryan Howard with runners at the corners in the top of the ninth for his 27th save as New York held off Philadelphia.

    BREWERS 7, NATIONALS 3

Prince Fielder and Casey McGehee homered, and Braden Looper (11-6) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings as visiting Milwaukee broke a four-game losing streak with a victory over Washington.

    PIRATES 5, REDS 2

Charlie Morton (3-6) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn his first win since July 18, and Garrett Jones and Lastings Milledge homered to lead visiting Pittsburgh past Cincinnati for its fourth straight victory.

    ASTROS 1, DIAMONDBACKS 0

Roy Oswalt (7-4) allowed three hits in seven innings, LaTroy Hawkins and Jose Valverde finished the four-hitter, and Jeff Keppinger drove in Hunter Pence with a fifth-inning double as host Houston handed Arizona its sixth straight loss.

    PADRES 4, CARDINALS 0

Nick Hundley hit a three-run homer and Clayton Richard (3-0) scattered five hits before being pulled after walking Mark DeRosa leading off the seventh as San Diego ended a nine-game losing streak to St. Louis, which included a three-game sweep last weekend.

    GIANTS 6, ROCKIES 3

Jonathan Sanchez (6-10) allowed an unearned run and two hits in five innings and Aaron Rowand hit a three-run homer to help visiting San Francisco close to within a game of Colorado in the NL wild-card chase.

    MARLINS 5, BRAVES 3

Hanley Ramirez extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games with three hits, including a two-run homer, to lead visiting Florida over Atlanta in a game delayed 2 hours, 28 minutes by thunder, lightning and rain in the ninth.
