Firefighters and Coast Guard help sail boaters off Keçeihi Lagoon

Firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard are helping a husband and wife who are a 25-foot sailboat experiencing trouble about a mile off shore by Keçeihi Lagoon tonight.

Two firefighters are on board of the boat, said Capt. Robert Main. The Honolulu Fire Department helicopter and rescue boat responded to the boater in distress call. Neither the husband nor wife report any injuries, Main said. The Coast Guard also is responding to the incident, Main said.
The boat launched from the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor earlier today and experienced some kind of malfunction about 6:30 p.m. The boat will be towed by the Coast Guard, said Coast Guard petty officer Michael De Nyse.
An incident investigation will be conducted afterward.
"With the Labor Day weekend coming up, we want to remind mariner's that it's always a good thing to make sure that their boats are seaworthy before launching," De Nyse said.
