VISIT THIS APARTM3NT

Nightclub veterans Flash Hansen and Matty Hazelgrove have teamed up with Chip Jewitt to open a different kind of lounge, with Apartm3nt (or Apartment 3), formerly Aria Restaurant. From the velvety black-and-silver striped walls to the gourmet pizza and hot dogs, it's all coming together. One of the highlights of the place is the Tuesday night all-night happy hour, with $3 drafts and $5 selected pupu starting at 5 p.m. You can also catch Justin James and his new band, Audible Oracle, every Wednesday starting at 8 p.m., or get your wine tasting fix on Thursdays with Uncorked. Newsflash: Fridays now feature the return of dance-centric Pussycat Lounge, the Wave Waikiki classic with DJ Eskae and guests. Apartm3nt, 955-9300, 1750 Kalakaua Ave.

NEW LIFE FOR OLD MATS

Have you ever wondered what happens to those neon colored floaties and beach mats that get left behind by tourists? Usually they go from hotel to landfill. Lately, Dale Geldum has been gathering them up daily to repurpose — in a fashionable way. She and partner David Watts created Kini Bags — a cute tote made out of recycled materials found on the beach. Check out Kini Bags at Sand People Hawaii in the Moana Surfrider Hotel, 2369 Kalakaua Ave., 924-6773; find out more online at www.kinibeach.com.

FASHION FIRST AID

It's happened to the best of us — the fashion "uh-oh." A button pops off your pants, you get caught with food stuck in your teeth, or you just can't find a hair tie on a blustery day. Urban Aid to the rescue! It's the perfect kit to slip into your glove compartment, purse or office desk, with essentials such as dental floss, a hair tie, a sewing kit, hydrating towelettes and more — plus room to add a few of your own personal musts. All of this combined into a tiny, convenient tin case that you can refill and keep nearby in case of those unforeseen emergencies; $13.50 and worth every penny. Find it at Persimmon in the Queens Shops in Waikoloa, 201 Waikoloa Beach Drive, Suite J10; 886-0303, or order online at www.persimmonboutique.com.

GET YOUR NAILS DID

The french tip is a classic, but who wants to be safe nowadays? Take a little risk in your pedi-mani and go with Minx — a decal that is heated onto your nails, making it last for more than four weeks with no chips or bubbling. Minx is a greener way of getting your nails done, as it contains no harsh chemicals, and lasts far longer than the typical mani-pedi. From hot designs such as leopard, to shiny metallics, Minx can take your toes from cute to "Whoah!" Check out www.minxnails.com for designs and details.

Get a set (manicure or a pedicure) for $40, or get your toes done up with matching nails for $70 at North Shore Nails, 66-560 Kamehameha Highway, Hale'iwa; 637-8089, www.northshorenails.com. Schedule a "Minx" party with six girlfriends and the host receives her set free.

SALES & BARGAINS

  •  Catch Roberta Oaks' once-a-year mad sale at the Made in Hawaii Festival (www.madeinhawaiifestival.com) at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall this weekend. Entry is just $3; once inside you'll be rewarded with dresses at just $60 (or two for $100!) and swim separates for $25 (two for $40). Check www.robertaoaks.com under SALE to see what's available. These deals are only available at the festival, so get off your butt and go.

  • We're no Cinderella, so we were delighted to see rows and rows and rows of new shoes at Nordstrom Rack in size 8-plus. It's not fair when size 6 ladies get the best selection. Among the mix: Lots of Sam Edelman flats and heels, Steve Madden everything, and so many gladiator styles they were spilling onto the floor! It's mind-boggling just how many styles there are to choose from. Also of note: Betsey Johnson costume jewelry, Marc Jacobs watches, and Ella Moss jersey separates. Looks like yet another delivery from Ala Moana just arrived, with new designer digs direct from the store in the mix. Dig hard and you shall be rewarded. Nordstrom Rack, Ward Centre; 589-2060.

  • Catch the last of the last at Club Monaco's Last Call Summer Sale happening now. Score up to 65 percent off spring and summer goods. Cuffed hot shorts in fun prints, perfectly simple sheaths and jersey tanks line the racks. Scoop these deals this weekend, because soon they'll be gone for good. Club Monaco, Ala Moana Center; 941-4277.

  • Hope you caught a peek of our fall fashion trends article on Friday (if not, check back issues at HonoluluAdvertiser.com). One trend we intend to sport is bright red lips, and a perfect shade for most is Nars lip liner in Amazon (a dark wine shade) on the outer edges, with Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil in Jungle Red (a bright pinky-orange red) applied to the center of the lips. Or use your favorite shades to create this look. The darker edges help to draw the eye in, creating depth and volume by contouring the lips. Pencils make it easy to apply precisely — and if you make a mistake, just take some concealer and a brush to perfect your edges. Unless you're going for '80s vamp, keep the focus on just your lips. Available at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom or Sephora.

  • Marie Louise Cleaners is offering a deal through the end of the month that will help you out: the Stimulus Shirt Special. Get four shirts cleaned for the price of three. Some restrictions apply. Marie Louise Cleaners. 1221 Kona St.; 593-1110.

  •  Bonus tip: Classes start tomorrow at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. All who drive by, plan on being fashionably late, unless you allow for extra traffic time.
