NFL: Seahawks reported close to adding Edgerrin James

By Danny O’Neil
The Seattle Times

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks are on the brink of adding an Edge to their running game.

The team reached an agreement with running back Edgerrin James on a one-year contract, which was first reported by ProFootballTalk.com and later confirmed by two other media reports.
James’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return calls, and a team spokesman for Seattle said the team would not comment Monday and that the speculation of James’ arrival will be addressed after the Seahawks’ practice Tuesday. It’s possible James could be on the field as soon as Tuesday’s 11 a.m. practice.
James, 31, ranks 11th in career rushing in the NFL, but he is coming off the least productive season of his career. He started seven games for Arizona last season, gained 514 yards last season as rookie Tim Hightower took more of the workload.
James went to Arizona in 2006 as a free agent. That was the same year Seattle re-signed Shaun Alexander after his MVP season.
Where James would fit into Seattle’s backfield is a key question. Julius Jones is the starter, but missed Saturday’s exhibition game because of an unspecified injury. T.J. Duckett started in Jones’ absence. Jones is expected back at practice Tuesday.
Seneca Wallace led Seattle with 20 yards rushing on two carries on Saturday against Denver.
SPENCER “WON’T BE BACK SOON”
Center Chris Spencer has suffered a slight tear of his quadriceps muscle and is not expected to be ready for the regular-season opener next month.
“I don’t want to put a timetable on it,” coach Jim Mora said, “but he won’t be back soon ... it’s not going to be two weeks. It’s going to be into the season.”
Spencer suffered the injury at the end of the second quarter in Saturday’s exhibition game against Denver. Spencer is Seattle’s starting center, and a first-round draft pick in 2005.
With Spencer out, the Seahawks face a choice in the middle of their line. Mora said the team is leaning toward starting Steve Vallos, a third-year player who became the starting center after Spencer’s injury last season. That would leave Mansfield Wrotto and rookie Max Unger competing for the right guard spot. Unger played center at Oregon so he could be a consideration in the middle.
Notes
—DT Craig Terrill suffered a back contusion in Saturday’s game. It’s questionable whether he will practice Tuesday.
—LB Aaron Curry (groin), DE Lawrence Jackson (groin) and WR Nate Burleson (hamstring) are all expected to practice Tuesday. All three sat out Saturday’s exhibition game against Denver.
—CB Marcus Trufant has not passed his physical because of a disk injury to his back, and while he won’t play in Saturday’s exhibition game, Mora left open the possibility he could appear on the practice field this week.
