NFL: Lions' Schwartz might remain mum on No. 1 QB

DETROIT — Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he is no closer to naming a starting quarterback after Saturday night’s 27-10 exhibition loss at Cleveland.

Rookie Matthew Stafford struggled. Veteran Daunte Culpepper was solid, though he didn’t lead the Lions to a score, either.
The two continued to split reps in practice Monday.
“We still have a long way to go,” Schwartz said. “I’ve never put a timetable on it. . . . We’re just going to keep on evaluating.”
Schwartz said he could decide on a starter as soon as this week or as late as after the fourth exhibition, Sept. 3 at Buffalo. Whenever he decides, he might keep it quiet.
“It probably won’t be this week, but we’ll see,” Schwartz said. “And the other thing is, from our standpoint, it may be even a point where we make a decision on a quarterback and we may not even announce it.”
The Lions open the season Sept. 13 at New Orleans.
“There’s a team down in New Orleans that’s getting ready to play us,” Schwartz said. “If they can zero in on one quarterback, it makes it a little easier for them to play. ...
“Mostly likely we’ll try to just keep that a little bit close to the vest.”
