Missing fisherman found clinging to overturned boat

Advertiser Staff

A 25-year-old fisherman reported missing Monday night was rescued 10 miles southwest of O'ahu yesterday morning.

The man left Wai'anae Small Boat Harbor about 6 a.m. Monday and was heading toward Ka'ena Point. At about 11:30 a.m., the Coast Guard said, the fisherman sent a text message to a friend that he was returning because the fishing was bad.

But the man did not return and police found his truck and trailer parked at the harbor late Monday night. Honolulu Fire Department crews and the Coast Guard searched for the man with no luck.

At dawn yesterday the search resumed and at about 6 a.m. the pilot of a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft spotted the fisherman clinging to an overturned 14-foot boat and waving for help. The Coast Guard radioed for help and a fishing vessel in the area picked up the fisherman.
