Police suspect alcohol, speeding in Waianae Crash that killed man, 58

Advertiser Staff

Police suspect the use of alcohol and speed were factors in the death of a 58-year-old Waianae man who was fatally injured last night when his truck collided with a light post and stone wall.

The crash occurred about 8:25 p.m. at the intersection of Lualualei Homestead Road and Kawili Street.
Vehicular homicide detectives said the victim was traveling north-bound on Lualualei Homestead Road in a 1988 Toyota pickup truck when he veered to the left to pass another vehicle.
The truck spun sideways and crashed into the pole and wall, traffic investigators said.
The driver was taken to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead about 10:50 p.m.
The driver was not using a seat belt, investigators said.
With last night’s death, the traffic death toll on Oahu now stands at 40 compared with 32 at the same time last year.
