Hawaii players help U.S. boys youth volleyball team upset Iran

Three players from Honolulu helped the United States boys youth national team upset defending champion Iran, 25-20, 13-25, 25-22, 25-23, today in the first day of pool play at the FIVB Boys Youth (19-under) World Championship in Jesolo, Italy.

Opposite Joshua Taylor (Ku‘ikahi Volleyball Club), who played the final two sets, scored nine points on eight kills and one ace. Setter Micah Christenson (Outrigger Canoe VC) tallied five points on one kill, three blocks and one ace, and had eight digs. Outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Outrigger) scored one point on an ace.
Taylor Sander of Norco, Calif., led all scorers with 21 points on a match-high 18 kills, two blocks and one ace.
The United States plays Serbia tomorrow and Japan on Sunday in pool play.
