Sallas, Moniz win longboard titles in Waikiki

Advertiser Staff

Kai Sallas and Kelia Moniz won longboard surfing contests today in Waikïkï.
Sallas won the Toes on the Nose Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic men’s contest.
Moniz won the Gidget Pro Open women’s contest.

Both events were part of the week-long Duke’s OceanFest at Kühiö Beach, Waikïkï.
Waves were small and infrequent for both finals, so wave selection was key.
Sallas dominated the men’s event, receiving a two-wave score of 13.5. Runner-up Steve Newton had a two-wave score of 9.0.
Sallas received $2,500 for the win.
Moniz, 16, earned the first professional victory of her career. She had a two-wave score of 14.5 to edge California’s Cori Schumacher (13.2).
Moniz, who is a junior at Elite Element Academy, received $2,000 for the win.
