'Swallow the Sun' a star-filled series

K-Drama

"Swallow the Sun," coming in the wake of the recently ended "City Hall," features an all-star cast, comparable to the star-filled series "On Air."

"Swallow the Sun" started in South Korea in early July and the show's action and romance have attracted a strong following of viewers.

There is high expectation for this particular series because producer/director Yoo Chul-yong and writer Choi Wan-gyu produced one of South Korea's all-time drama hits — "All In" with Lee Byung-hun, Song Hye-gyo and Ji Sung.

Ji Sung is also in this series, in the main male role, alongside singer-turned-actress Sung Yuri, Lee Wan, Jung Kwang-yul ("King and I") and Yoo Oh-sung ("Friends").

Some portions of "All In" were filmed in Las Vegas and "Swallow the Sun" is following suit. Other parts were filmed on Jeju Island, with scenes in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"Swallow the Sun" is about three young people trying to make Jeju City a world-class destination comparable to Las Vegas, similar to a plot from "All In." With so many similarities, many fans have nicknamed the series "All In 2."

The new series features Ji Sung as Kim Jung-woo, an orphan who desires to succeed. His father, Kim Il-hwan, was a criminal and his mother, Mi Yeon, a native of Jeju Island.

By chance, Jung Woo saves a rich businessman Jang Min-ho (played by Jung Kwang-yul), only to end up the fall guy for the businessman's son, Jang Tae Hyuk (played by Lee Wan), and Jung Woo goes to prison vowing revenge.

A love triangle ensues between Lee Su-hyun (played by Sung Yuri), Jung Woo and Tae Hyuk.

Several staff on the "Swallow the Sun" team were diagnosed with HlN1 virus when they returned from Las Vegas in early July, which resulted in quarantine time and postponement of press conferences, and the series start date was pushed back to July 9.

Jeju is a volcanic island at the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. One of the main industries is tourism, much like Hawai'i. Many South Koreans go to Jeju Island for their honeymoons and for the fresh seafood. Women free divers, known on Jeju as haenyuh, dive for abalone and other marine products. Jeju Island is also the home of PGA champion Yang Young-eun, who defeated Tiger Woods this month in the last major of the year.

"Swallow the Sun" is on the SBS network and is slated for 24 episodes. Next week, KBFD will start airing the series on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
