Alcohol, speeding suspected in fatal crash of Toyota truck

Advertiser Staff

Police suspect alcohol and speeding were factors in the death of a 58-year-old Wai'anae man who was fatally injured Wednesday night when his truck collided with a light post and stone wall.

The crash occurred about 8:25 p.m. at the intersection of Lualualei Homestead Road and Kawili Street.

Vehicular homicide detectives said the victim, identified as James Nakata, was traveling north on Lualualei Homestead Road in a 1988 Toyota pickup truck when he veered to the left to pass a vehicle.

The truck spun sideways and crashed into the pole and wall, traffic investigators said.

Nakata was taken to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead about 10:50 p.m.

Nakata was not using a seat belt, investigators said.
