The Venture Crew 123, an older Boys Scouts riflery team from Hawai'i, took first place in one national championship and second in another last month.

The team, composed of some first-time shooters who had to practice in a converted carport, won first place in the State Association Team category at the NRA National Junior Air Gun Championships and later a silver at the National Junior Olympic 3-P Air Rifle Championship. Both events were held at Camp Perry, Ohio.

At the NRA July 1 to 3, Kalani High's Kristy Inouye finished ninth overall while taking second in the junior category. Other team members were Chaminade University's Christopher Lam (19th), Kalani's Peter Mathre (20th), Kaimuki High's Keanu Paikai (41st), Kalani's Jennifer Nose (56th) and Sacred Hearts' Kelly Lam (72nd).

In the Junior Olympics held July 7 to 9, the team competed in the Sporter Club category. Team members were Inouye, Mathre, Nose and Paikai.

The Venture Crew 123 had to win the state Junior Olympic qualifier to advance to the nationals. Several of the team members had to borrow rifles and other shooting equipment to compete in the qualifier.Jr. Olympic medals for Quinn, Aughenbaugh

JR. OLYMPIC MEDALS FOR QUINN, AUGHENBAUGH

Mitchell Quinn of Kailua won a silver medal and Josh Aughenbaugh of La'ie won a bronze at the Jr. Olympic Skills Competition in Chula Vista, Calif., last month.

Quinn competed in the boys ages 8-9 in track and field where competitors had to do a 50-meter dash and standing broad jump.

Aughenbaugh competed in the boys 10-11 division in tennis where competitors had to serve and continue to hit a tennis ball against a wall as many times as possible in 30 seconds.

The two boys advanced to the July 24 finals through local and regional competitions.

COSTELLO WINS MASTERS AGE-GROUP IN DECATHLON

Hawai'i Masters Track Club's Vince Costello won the men's 55-59 age group and Kevin Kruszona took sixth in the M50-59 during the national masters decathlon in Seattle Aug. 15-16.

Costello's score was 6,231 points while Kruszona had 4,075.
