Four DII boys fields reduced

By Wes Nakama

The state tournament fields for Division II boys basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball will be reduced from 12 teams to eight this school year, after a vote by the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association's executive board yesterday.

The reduction is a compromise from a proposal approved by the state's athletic directors in June, which would have reduced tournament sizes according to the number of teams participating per division statewide.

The HHSAA board was advised to address gender equity concerns before voting on any reductions, and after several committee meetings since June it presented two proposals up for vote yesterday:

• Proposal 1 would have left the DII boys basketball tournament at 12 teams but reduced DI boys soccer and volleyball to eight teams each, as well as DII girls soccer and softball.

• Proposal 2, which passed by a vote of 66 schools to 29, leaves all DI and girls state tournament fields at 12 teams each and affects only four DII boys tournaments.

Based on committee estimates on how many players are on a typical roster, the reduction in state tournament berths is expected to affect 280 athletes.

In June, the HHSAA board approved AD proposals to reduce the state tournament fields for individual sports by about 20 percent.
