Big Island firefighters extinguish chemical fire at Kawaihae Harbor

Advertiser Staff

Big Island firefighters yesterday extinguished a hazardous chemical fire that engulfed two pallets of pool and spa supplies at a Young Brothers storage facility at Kawaihae Harbor.

Firefighters from South Kohala arrived at the scene just before 5:40 p.m. and brought the fire under control within five minutes.
There were no injuries reported.
The fire company diked a drain to prevent runoff and worked with Young Brothers personnel to ensure the material from the fire was safely set aside. Young Brothers will pack and dispose of the material on Monday.
The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage.
Investigators believe the fire was caused by a chemical reaction resulting from oxidizer leaking onto packing material within the load.
