Traffic disruptions expected from Sept. 6 Kauai Marathon

Kaua’i officials are warning motorists to exercise “extreme caution” on Sept. 6 because of road closures for the inaugural Kaua'i Marathon and Half Marathon, scheduled to begin at 6 a.m.

Drivers are urged to limit or postpone driving around the south shore of Kaua’i from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To accommodate the marathon, the following streets or lanes will be closed:
• Ho’onani Road from Lawa’i Road to Kapili Road — from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Po'ipu Road between Kapili Road and Ala Kinoiki Road — from 5:30 a.m. to 6:15 a.m.
• Outbound lane of Ala Kinoiki Road – from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
• Southbound lane of Ala Kalanikaumaka Road (Kukui’ula bypass road) – from 6:15 am to 1:30 p.m.
• Outbound lane of Maluhia Road, from Ala Kinoiki Road to Kaumuali’i Highway – from 6:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
• Southbound lane of Kaumuali’i Highway – from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
• Inbound lane of Koloa Road — from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• Makai lane of Papalina Road from Waha Road to Pu’u Road — from 7:15 am to noon.
In addition, the following streets will be closed:
• Oma’o Road from Kaumuali’i Highway to Koloa Road — from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
• ‘Lauoho Road— from 7:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Waha Road — from 7:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Pu’u Road — from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Po’ipu roundabout will be open during the marathon but will be heavily affected from 6:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as runners enter the roundabout from Ala Kalanikaumaka Road (Kukui’ula bypass road) and cross over to Lawa’i Road and then onto Ho’onani Road.
